Methodology: One row per county per NAICS code from the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns file for 2022, at NAICS 532412 (construction, mining and forestry machinery and equipment rental and leasing) and 532310 (general rental centers), which together are what this hub is about: the machine yards and the tool counters. The count is ESTABLISHMENTS, meaning physical locations, not companies: one national chain with four yards in a county counts four times, which is the right unit for somebody asking who is near them. County names and coordinates come from the Census gazetteer; a county the gazetteer does not name is left out rather than guessed. CBP suppresses employment and payroll detail for small cells, so this index publishes establishment counts alone. There is no register of rental yards to read, because renting a machine is not a licensed activity in the United States, and this index does not pretend to be one: it says how many are there, not which.
