What the tail does on a conventional machine
On a standard excavator the counterweight swings out past the tracks as the cab turns, and that arc is the hazard nobody plans for. Anything inside it gets struck: a wall, a parked vehicle, scaffolding, a person. Sites manage it with barriers and a banksman. A zero tail machine removes the arc instead of managing it.
Zero against reduced tail swing
Zero means the tail stays within the track width through a full rotation. Reduced means it overhangs a little, often across only part of the arc, and it buys back some of the stability and dig force that zero designs give up. Moving the counterweight inboard costs lifting capacity over the side, and the machine is often heavier for its class to compensate. Is a zero tail swing excavator harder to operate?
The controls are the same. What differs is that you lean on boom offset more, because the cab cannot swing wide to line the bucket up with a wall. An hour of practice on open ground before the tight work pays for itself.
Do all mini excavators have zero tail swing?
No. Plenty of minis are conventional and overhang exactly like the larger machines. Do not assume it from the size, and say the words when the job runs along a boundary, because the substitution sent otherwise will not fit.
Does it cost more to rent?
Usually a little, within the same class band rather than a tier above. The larger cost of getting it wrong is a day lost to a machine that cannot work where you needed it, so the difference rarely decides anything.
Can it still lift?
Yes, but read the load chart over the side rather than over the tracks. The inboard counterweight is felt most in that direction, and the chart figures are what the yard is contracted to rather than the headline capacity.
