Mini excavators are the most rented earthmoving machines in the country because they fit where a full size machine cannot. A 1 ton unit passes a thirty six inch gate, a 3 to 4 ton digs footings and service trenches all day, and an 8 to 10 ton is close to a standard excavator with a shorter tail swing. Pick by access first, then by depth
The size question is settled by the tightest thing the machine has to pass through and the deepest hole it has to dig. Measure the gate, the side return and any overhead wires before you call. A 1 to 2 ton machine reaches roughly six to eight feet down, a 3 to 4 ton around ten, and an 8 ton twelve or more.
Zero tail swing is worth asking for
On a conventional machine the counterweight swings out past the tracks, so working alongside a house or a fence means constantly repositioning. Zero and reduced tail swing models keep the rear inside the track width, which turns an awkward day into an ordinary one. They cost a little more per day and are the first thing to go out of the fleet in spring.
What comes with the machine, and what does not
A hire normally includes one digging bucket. A thumb, a grading bucket, an auger or a breaker are separate lines and have to be reserved with the machine, not asked for at delivery. Fuel is charged back if the tank comes home low, and a damage waiver is offered on the ticket, so price the whole set together.
Delivery, and the rules once the hole is open
Machines above about 2 tons are delivered, priced each way from the yard by the mile. Once digging starts the trench itself becomes the hazard: federal rules require protection for excavations five feet deep or more, and a competent person inspecting them. Trench boxes and shoring hire from the same counter, so book them alongside the machine.

What size mini excavator do I need for a trench?
For a shallow service run, a 1 to 2 ton machine is enough and gets through a garden gate. For footings, drainage or anything past six feet deep, a 3 to 4 ton is the workhorse size and will not stall on roots or hard clay the way a smaller machine does.
Can I tow a mini excavator myself?
A 1 to 2 ton machine on a suitable trailer is within reach of a half ton truck for many people, and yards do rent that combination. Above roughly three tons you are into heavy trailers and higher tow ratings, and most customers take delivery instead.
Do I need a license to operate one?
No federal operator license exists for excavators the way it does for road vehicles. The yard will show you the controls and expects you to be competent; on a commercial site your employer is responsible for training you, and the utility locate call before digging is not optional.
How much is a mini excavator for a week?
Usually about three day rates, so roughly $750 to $1,800 across the size classes, plus delivery each way. If a job is going to run past four days, ask for the weekly rate at the outset rather than accumulating daily charges.
