A carry deck is a yard machine, not a road machine
Carry decks in the eight to fifteen ton band pick a load, carry it across a site and set it down. They steer in four modes, turn in their own length and fit through a wide gate. They do not drive on the highway, so transport is a lowboy each way and that line often costs as much as half a day of hire.
Spider cranes go where nothing else fits
A compact tracked crane folds narrow enough for a standard doorway, runs on battery or a small engine indoors, and spreads onto four outrigger legs that can be set at different heights on stairs or uneven floors. Glass installers and plant rooms are its natural work. It costs more per ton lifted than anything else in the yard.
Small does not mean bare rental
Carry decks are sometimes hired bare to contractors who already run cranes and carry their own insurance. Spider cranes and boom trucks are usually operated. Ask which the price assumes, because an operated day and a bare day for the same machine are different products with different insurance behind them.
Ground and floor loading decide the job
A small crane concentrates its whole weight onto four pads. On a suspended slab or a basement lid that is a structural question, and the answer comes from the building, not the yard. A spider crane in the smallest class will, at roughly 30 to 36 inches wide with the legs folded. Check the doorway, the turns beyond it and the floor rating along the whole route, because getting the machine in is only useful if it can reach the work.
Do I need a permit for a one day lift?
It depends on where the machine stands, not on its size. Setting up in a street, on a sidewalk or over a public right of way generally needs a permit from the local authority, and lead times run days rather than hours. Working entirely inside private property usually does not.
