A chiller rental is process cooling on a trailer or a skid: it chills water or a glycol mix and pumps it to an air handler, a mould, a brewery tank or a data hall while the permanent plant is offline or undersized. Rental fleets run roughly 10 to 500 tons, and units are quoted by the week or the month rather than the day. Sizing and site services decide the price far more than the badge does.
Air-cooled is what a rental fleet holds
Almost every rental chiller is air-cooled, because a water-cooled machine needs a cooling tower and condenser water you probably do not have spare. Air-cooled means the unit rejects heat straight to atmosphere, so it needs clear air on all sides and somewhere outside to stand. That constraint decides the drop location before anyone discusses tons.
Three things it needs before it will run
Power, water and hose. Power is three-phase and sized to the compressor, which is where a generator rental often joins the order. Water or a glycol mix has to fill the loop, and glycol is required wherever it can freeze. Hose runs are charged by the foot in both directions, and a long run needs a bigger pump.
Sizing without guessing
A ton of cooling is 12,000 BTU per hour. Comfort cooling in an office starts near one ton per 400 square feet; a process load is calculated from flow rate and the temperature drop you need, not from floor area. Give the yard the load in tons or the flow and delta, plus the lowest supply temperature, and let them pick.
How the rate is built
Expect a weekly or monthly rate on the machine, then mobilisation and demobilisation, hoses, manifolds, glycol, a pump package if the loop is long, and a technician visit to commission it. On an emergency call-out the transport and the after-hours labour can rival a week of the machine itself.

How many tons do I need?
For comfort cooling, start at one ton per 400 square feet and reduce the area per ton for glass, people and equipment. For a process loop, the number comes from flow rate and temperature drop. A rental engineer will size it free if you give them those figures.
Do I need a generator with it?
Only if the site cannot supply the three-phase load. Many emergency chiller hires arrive with a generator because the reason the permanent plant is down is electrical, so ask for both to be quoted together rather than separately.
How quickly can one be on site?
Small air-cooled units within a day in most metros. Above about 200 tons you are into specialist transport and a permit route, which adds days and often the largest single line on the quote.
