The data plate carries the only number that counts
Every truck has a plate on the dash or the mast showing the model, the serial number, the rated capacity, the load center and the service weight. Brochure figures cover a family of machines and can be out by a ton. Ask the yard to photograph the plate of the actual unit before delivery and keep the picture.
A working ratio while you are still choosing
For counterbalance trucks the machine commonly weighs somewhere between one and a half and two times what it is rated to lift, so a 5,000 lb truck lands near 8,000 to 9,500 lb. Rough terrain machines break the pattern upward, and a 12,000 lb class unit can pass 30,000 lb. Treat the ratio as a shortlist tool, never as a figure to quote.
Battery, attachment and load all add to it
