Welding rentals from a plant yard: when the engine driven set is also the site generator, and what has to be hired alongside it

Rental counters file welding rentals beside the generators for a reason: an engine driven welder does both jobs, striking an arc and throwing off auxiliary power for grinders, lights and a small pump. That machine runs about $110 to $200 a day. A plain inverter is nearer $50 but assumes a supply on site that a bare lot does not have.

One machine doing two jobs

On a site with no service connection, the engine drive is the power plant as well as the welder. Roughly 10 kW of auxiliary output will carry a couple of grinders and a string of lights while somebody welds. That is why hiring one can be cheaper than a small generator and an inverter taken separately, and it is one less thing on the delivery.

The weather picks the process

Gas shielded wire looks attractive until a breeze crosses the joint and takes the shield with it, leaving porosity. Outdoors, stick and self shielded flux cored wire are the reliable choices and every rental engine drive supports them. Indoors or in a tent, a wire machine with gas gives a cleaner bead and less cleanup.

Duty cycle is measured in minutes

A machine rated at a given amperage can weld only so many minutes out of every ten before it has to cool, and that rating falls as the current rises. Long structural passes at high current are what expose an undersized set. Tell the counter the plate thickness and the electrode you plan to burn, not just the amperage on the label.

The fume follows the arc

Welding produces metal fume and gases, and galvanised, painted or coated steel makes that considerably worse. Federal rules limit airborne exposure, so a fume extractor, a fan set to draw across the joint, or plain open air is part of planning the work. Yards hire portable extraction beside the welders for exactly this reason.

Questions people ask about welding rentals

Can I run the site off a welder generator?

For hand tools and lights, yes, within the auxiliary rating on the plate. For anything with a large starting load, such as a compressor or a pump motor, size a proper generator instead. The auxiliary winding on a welder is a convenience, not a substitute for the right machine.

Is shielding gas included in a welding hire?

No. Cylinders are supplied on their own arrangement, either bought outright by the fill or hired with a rental charge on the bottle that runs until it comes back. Regulators and hoses may or may not be in the package, so confirm both before you leave.

What comes with an engine driven welder?

The machine, usually on a trailer or skid, and the leads are commonly extra. Helmets, gloves, jackets, wire brushes and electrodes are counter items you buy. Ask for the lead length as well as the size, because welding twenty feet further out than your leads reach is a wasted delivery.
