Production rental at an equipment yard means the plant side of a shoot or a live build: generators and distribution, light towers, scissor lifts and telehandlers for rigging, ground protection, temporary fencing and spot cooling. Cameras, lighting packages and grip trucks come from specialist houses, and marquees, staging and seating are event hire, which is a separate trade with separate suppliers.
Power first, and it is a distribution problem
A location with no supply runs on a towable set, and the cable, spider boxes and transformers matter as much as the kilowatts on the badge. Quiet and super silenced canopies exist for exactly this work and are worth asking for by name. Place the set downwind and far enough off that sound is not fighting it all day.
Rigging access on a location
Scissor lifts put lights and drapes into position indoors on a slab, while a rough terrain machine or a telehandler does the same outside on grass or gravel. Choose the class by floor surface first and height second. Where a machine crosses turf that has to be handed back intact, hire mats with it rather than afterwards.
Protecting the ground you were lent
Ground protection mats, road plates and temporary trackway keep vehicles and lifts off soft ground and are hired by the sheet or by the run. Add temporary fencing, barricades and a traffic message board where the public has to be held back or routed around. All of it comes off the same counter that hires excavators.
Climate kit is a day rate item too
Spot coolers, air handlers, construction heaters and dehumidifiers hire by the day and turn a hangar or an empty warehouse into somewhere people can work for twelve hours. Size them on the heat load in the space and confirm the supply voltage before booking, since a unit nobody can plug in is a delivery charge for nothing.
Questions people ask about production rental
Can a plant yard supply a generator quiet enough to shoot beside?
Ask for a super silenced or studio specified canopy and a stated sound level at a given distance. A standard construction set is too loud for dialogue close up, though distance, cable and a barrier solve much of it. Book the cable run at the same time as the set.
Do production hires get different terms?
Usually shorter and tighter. Weekend collection, overnight holds and a firm return time are common, and branches will hold kit against a confirmed booking. Expect the same waiver, fuel and delivery lines as any other hire, and get any out of hours collection agreed in writing beforehand.
Is event equipment available from the same supplier?
Rarely. Marquees, staging, seating and catering kit come from event hire companies, while the equipment yard covers plant, power, access and site kit. A production normally books both and has them delivered against the same call sheet on the same morning.
