Mini excavator rental prices are a machine rate with a stack of separate lines under it, which is why two yards can both quote $320 a day and bill totals hundreds apart. The machine rate follows operating weight almost exactly. Transport, the damage waiver, the fuel policy and any attachment sit below it, and that is where the two quotes stop agreeing.
Weight class is the whole price ladder
A one to two tonne machine narrow enough for a side gate is the cheapest thing on the row, commonly $250 to $350 a day. Three to four tonnes with a blade and a thumb sits nearer $350 to $500. Five tonnes and up, where real depth and reach start, runs $500 to $600 and beyond. Manufacturer badge changes almost nothing.
Where two quotes stop matching
Compare four lines, not the rate. Transport is billed out and back, and one yard quoting round trip against another quoting each way explains most of the gap on its own. Then the fuel policy, full to full against a refuelling charge per gallon. Then the waiver. Then any environmental or ancillary fee that appears only on the final invoice.
Three rates, and the arithmetic between them
A week is usually priced near three day rates and a month near three weeks, so two separate three day hires cost more than one week and far more than half a month. Where the finish date is uncertain, book the longer term and ask what the early return credit is. Plenty of yards give one and almost none volunteer it.
Ask for a delivered total, not a rate
Give the yard the site address, the dates and the attachment you want, and ask for one number that includes getting the machine there and back. The Census Bureau counts 5,830 equipment rental establishments across 544 counties in all fifty states, so in most metros there are several yards to put the same question to. That is how many exist, not which hold minis.

Why is delivery so expensive on a one day hire?
Because it is a truck, a driver and two trips regardless of how long you keep the machine. On a single day the haul can match or beat the rate itself. Stretching the same hire to a week spreads that fixed cost across more working days, which is why the week is often the better buy.
Is the damage waiver optional?
It is offered rather than required at most yards, and declining it usually means proving you carry equipment cover of your own with the yard named on it. The waiver is written on the quote as its own line, and it excludes things: read what it does not cover before deciding.
Does an attachment change the machine rate?
No, it adds a line. A breaker, an auger or a compaction plate is priced per day on top of the machine, and a machine plumbed for hydraulic attachments sometimes carries a higher base rate than one that is not. Say what you need to break or drill when you ask for the quote.
Are prices the same across the country?
No. Dense metros with several competing yards tend to price lower per day and charge less for a short haul; rural counties with one general rental centre price the machine similarly and the transport far higher. The distance from yard to site is the local variable that moves your total most.
