Very few rental counters stock a domestic lawn tractor, because nobody hires one twice a week for a small lawn. Acreage picks the machine
Under an acre of ordinary lawn, a walk behind machine or your own mower is quicker than trailering something home. One to five acres of neglected grass is rough cut rider territory. Above five acres, a compact tractor with a tow behind deck covers ground far faster and is the machine to ask the yard for.
Getting it home is the real planning
A rider will not fit in a car and most will not climb into a pickup bed without proper ramps. Yards rent trailers alongside, or deliver for a charge each way. Check the trailer weight against your vehicle rating, strap the machine at four points, and drop the deck to its lowest position for travel.
What the counter checks on return
Fuel to the policy on the contract, a deck cleaned of packed clippings, and blades that have not met a rock or a hidden stump. Walk the ground first and mark anything solid, because a bent spindle or a cracked deck is a repair bill rather than a wear item. Hour meters, where fitted, decide any overtime line.

Why can I not rent an ordinary lawn tractor?
Because the people who cut a lawn weekly buy one, so a rental fleet of them would sit idle. Rental economics favour the machine you need for two days a year, which is why the counter stocks brush cutting equipment instead. If you need a lawn tractor every week, hiring one is the expensive way.
Will a rough cut rider give a lawn finish?
No. It is built to cut tall growth down to a few inches without stalling, and it leaves a rough, uneven result with clippings in windrows. The usual approach is to knock the field down with a rough cut machine, then go over it with a normal mower a week later.
How long will an acre take?
On a rough cut rider through heavy growth, an acre is a comfortable half day once you count turning, obstacles and stopping to clear the deck. With a tractor and a wide tow behind deck on open ground it is much faster. Slopes, trees and fences slow everything down.
Is a half day rate worth it?
Only if the machine is small enough for you to collect and return twice in a day without wasting the saving on the drive. For anything trailered or delivered, the full day rate is nearly always the better buy, and it takes the clock pressure off the job.
