The site has to be ready before it arrives
A lowboy needs somewhere to pull in, drop a ramp and get out again. The machine needs ground that carries it, room to swing and a route clear of soft fill and low wires. Yards will ask, and a delivery that cannot be made is usually charged anyway, so send photographs of the access if there is any doubt.

Can I hire a large machine with an operator?
Many yards offer operated hire on the big classes and some rent no other way. The operator is priced by the hour against a minimum, and overtime past the booked block costs more. For a week of work that is often cheaper than finding, training and insuring an operator yourself.
How far ahead should heavy kit be booked?
Two to four weeks is normal in busy season, because the machine, the haul truck and the crew all have to be free on the same morning. In winter or a quiet market a few days can be enough. The haulage is the part that gets tight first.
Does my insurance cover a rented machine that size?
General liability rarely covers the machine itself. Yards sell a damage waiver as its own line on the contract, and larger customers instead present a certificate of insurance naming the rental company. Settle which route you are taking before delivery, because the machine will not be released without one of them.
