A backhoe loader is two machines on one chassis: a loader bucket in front for carrying and grading, a boom behind for digging. That is why yards rent so many of them to jobs that would otherwise need an excavator and a loader together. Rates track dig depth and loader capacity, and transport is the second number on every quote.
The size classes yards actually stock
Most fleets carry a standard centre pivot machine with about 14 ft of dig depth, a larger 15 to 16 ft unit, and sometimes a compact tractor loader backhoe for tight residential lots. The middle machine is the volume seller, which makes it the one most likely to be free at short notice and priced keenly.
Four wheel drive and an extending dipper are the options that matter
Two wheel drive is fine on a dry level lot and useless in mud. Four wheel drive costs more per day and earns it on the first wet morning. An extending dipper stick buys a few feet of reach and depth without repositioning, which pays on trench work along a fence line or a wall.
Driving it or trucking it
A backhoe is road legal in many places at a slow speed, so short moves between sites happen under its own power. Anything past a few miles goes on a truck, quoted each way. Ask whether the delivery rate is a flat metro figure or a mileage figure, because on rural work those two numbers are far apart.
Reading the ticket before you sign it
A day rate covers the machine against an eight hour meter. Expect a damage waiver line, an environmental or shop supply line, fuel out and back, and a minimum hire on most tickets. Hours beyond the meter are charged pro rata, so a very long shift on a single day hire is not free.

Do I want a backhoe or an excavator?
If spoil has to be moved, loaded or backfilled as you go, the loader end saves a second machine and a second operator. If the job is purely digging in a confined space, a tracked excavator turns tighter, sits lighter on the ground and usually costs less to hire and to haul.
How long should I book it for?
Day, week and four week rates are standard, and the month is where the cost per day collapses. Yards will roll a hire on if nothing is booked behind you, but that is not guaranteed in spring, so book the span you expect rather than the span you hope for.
Which attachments come with it?
A loader bucket and a standard digging bucket are normally on the machine. Narrow trenching buckets, a hydraulic breaker, forks or a thumb are quoted as extras with their own daily rate, and a breaker usually carries its own waiver line.
What will it do to the ground?
Rubber tires are kinder than steel tracks on a finished surface, but a loaded backhoe still marks soft turf and can crack a thin residential slab. Plywood or track mats along the route are cheap next to a repair bill.
