The word small stretches further than people expect, so the figure only helps once you know which of three quite different classes the yard is quoting you.

Under 3,500 pounds is the micro end, the machine that fits a gate. Between 5,000 and 8,000 is the compact class that does most residential work. Between 9,000 and 11,000 you are at 5 tons, still called small by the trade and no longer small on a trailer or a lawn. Ask which one you are being quoted.

Delivery is banded by machine weight and distance, because it decides which truck comes out. A 3,000 pound machine goes on a light plant trailer behind a pickup; a 10,000 pound one needs a tilt bed. That is why the haul on a slightly bigger machine can jump more than the day rate does.

Parking structures, roof decks, basement lids, small bridges on rural roads, cattle grids and residential driveways over a culvert all carry limits, and some of them are signed. Where the machine has to cross one, the number to compare is the machine plus the transport, not the machine alone.
Add the attachment before you book the trailer
A hydraulic breaker, an auger drive, a thumb, a grading bucket and a full tank all ride with the machine. Together they add several hundred pounds to a compact machine, and the trailer, ramps and chains add far more than that again. Weigh the combination on paper before you decide to collect it yourself.

Does the quoted weight include the bucket?
Operating weight normally includes a standard bucket, full fuel and an operator allowance, while shipping weight may not. Manufacturers state which is which on the spec sheet. When it matters for a trailer or a floor limit, ask the yard for the figure with the attachments you are actually hiring.
Which small excavator can a half ton pickup tow?
Realistically the 1 to 1.5 ton machines, on a light plant trailer, with the combination kept under the truck's rating. From 3 tons upward the honest answer is a three quarter ton truck with a proper trailer, or paying the yard to deliver it.
Will a 3 ton machine damage a lawn?
It will mark it, and it will tear turf on every turn, but on rubber tracks the ground pressure is lower than a loaded wheelbarrow across a small area. Damage comes from turning and from wet ground, so drive straight lines and lay mats where the route repeats.
Is a heavier machine always better?
For breakout force, yes; for everything else, no. Extra weight costs you access, haulage and ground damage, and a machine too big to get in digs nothing at all. Hire the smallest machine that can finish the job in the days you have.
