Read the load chart, not the model number
A truck badged at 15,000 lb carries that at a stated load center, usually 24 inches, at a modest height. Move the weight further out on the forks or lift it higher and the safe figure drops sharply. Give the yard the load weight, its dimensions and the height it must reach, and let the chart choose the truck.
Where the machine has to stand
A large capacity truck plus its load can put a great deal of weight through four small contact patches. Suspended slabs, basement car parks, service covers and fresh asphalt are all worth checking before delivery day. Yards will ask about the surface, and the answer changes whether you want a cushion tire truck or a pneumatic one.
Attachments and the fork length
Long loads want long forks or a fork extension, drums want a clamp, and paper or crates may want a rotator. Every one of these reduces the rated capacity and is charged as a separate line. Book the attachment with the machine rather than discovering on the morning that the yard's only rotator is out.
Delivery and turning space
Heavy trucks travel on a lowboy trailer and need somewhere to unload it. Measure the gate, the aisle and the turning circle, because a 30,000 lb machine has a large outside turning radius and does not tolerate being reversed round a tight corner all day. Transport is quoted each way and is not part of the rate.

Powered industrial truck rules place training and authorisation on the employer, and it is specific to the truck type and the workplace. The yard's handover is familiarisation with that machine, which is not the same as the employer's evaluation, so plan your own operator's paperwork before the truck lands.
What size forklift do I need to unload a shipping container?
A loaded 20 ft container can weigh well over 20 tons, which is a container handler rather than a standard truck. Unloading pallets from inside the container is a different question and often needs a truck with a short mast that will fit under the door frame.
Can I rent a heavy forklift for a single day?
