What hydroseeder rental costs for a weekend, and how much ground one tank of slurry really covers

Hydroseeder rental costs about $250 to $400 a day for a 300 gallon towable machine and $450 to $800 for the larger 500 to 750 gallon units. One 300 gallon tank of slurry covers roughly 2,500 to 4,000 square feet depending on the mulch loading, so the job is planned in tank loads rather than in hours.

Work out the number of tanks first

Measure the area, divide by the coverage the yard quotes for that tank and mix, and you have the number of loads. Each load takes time to fill, mix and spray, so a quarter acre is a comfortable day and an acre is not. Booking two days and finishing in one is cheaper than the reverse.

Jet agitation or mechanical paddles

Jet agitated machines recirculate the slurry with a pump and suit paper mulch at lighter loadings, which is the usual homeowner and small contractor hire. Mechanical machines turn paddles in the tank and can carry heavier wood mulch and thicker mixes. Ask which one you are getting before buying the mulch, not after.

What you supply and what the yard supplies

The machine, the hose and the nozzle come from the yard. Seed, mulch, fertiliser and tackifier are yours, and some counters sell them beside the hire. You also supply water, which is the part people forget: a 300 gallon tank refilled four times is a lot of hose time if the nearest tap is at the house.

Towing it home

Empty, a 300 gallon trailer unit is a light tow for a half ton truck with a proper hitch and working lights. Full, it is not, and these machines are meant to travel empty and be filled on site. Check the coupler size and the trailer's rating against the vehicle before you leave the yard.

Questions people ask about hydroseeder rental

How soon does hydroseeded grass come up?

Seed usually shows in one to three weeks depending on species, soil temperature and how consistently it is watered. The tacky green mulch holds moisture and keeps the seed in place on a slope, which is the whole reason for spraying it rather than broadcasting.

Can I hydroseed without buying tackifier?

On a flat lawn, a paper mulch mix without added tackifier is often enough. On a slope or anywhere runoff will cross the seeded area, the tackifier is what stops the first heavy rain taking the whole application to the bottom of the hill.

Do I have to clean the machine before returning it?

Yes, and it is a real job rather than a formality: dried slurry sets hard in a pump and a tank. Rinse and run clean water through the system on site while the machine is still wet. Yards charge a cleaning fee that costs more than the twenty minutes.
