Hiring a generator is rarely just hiring a generator. The quote carries a sized set, the cable and distribution to get power where it is used, a fuel arrangement, and a callout term for the night it stops. A 25 kW towable set runs roughly $250 to $400 a week and a 60 kW unit about $400 to $700, before fuel, cable or the service that keeps it running.
The set is one line on the quote
Around it sit cable runs, a distribution panel or spider box, ground rods, a fuel tank or a refuelling schedule, and delivery each way. Ask for the quote itemised. A cheap set with everything else added at collection time is dearer than a fair set quoted whole, and only the itemised version can be compared.
Sizing is the service worth paying for
Running watts are easy; starting current is what trips a set. Motors, compressors and welders draw a multiple of their running load for a moment, and a generator sized on the nameplate sum will stall. Give the supplier the actual load list and let them size it, then ask whether they will load bank test before delivery.
Fuel: who fills it and who pays
Three arrangements are common. You refuel and return it full. The supplier refuels on a schedule and bills the diesel. Or a bulk tank is delivered alongside and drawn down. On a long hire the fuel bill dwarfs the rental, so the arrangement, not the day rate, is what decides the total cost.
Callout, swap and standby terms
Read what happens at two in the morning. A real service contract names a response window and whether the answer is a repair or a replacement set on a truck. If the load is critical, ask for the swap term in writing and check whether the standby set is held locally or three counties away.

The Census Bureau counts 5,830 equipment rental establishments in 544 counties across all fifty states, split between machinery yards and general rental centers. That count says how many businesses are there, not which of them keeps sized generators, cable and a night engineer. In a thin county the nearest full service supplier may be an hour away.

What size generator does a jobsite need?
It depends on the starting loads rather than the tool count. A site running hand tools and a light tower manages on a small set; add a compressor, a welder or a pump and the requirement jumps. Send the supplier a list of every motor and its rating and let them size it.
Is fuel included in a generator rental?
Usually not. The set arrives full and you either return it full or pay the supplier's refuelling rate, which is always the dearer option. On hires longer than a week or two, ask for a scheduled fuel service and a price per gallon up front.
What happens if the set fails overnight?
That is what the callout term covers, and it varies enormously between suppliers. Some carry a response window and a standby unit; others will look at it the next working day. If your load cannot lose power, buy the term rather than assuming it.
