Access decides the price as much as distance does: a machine that has to be walked a long way from where the trailer can park, or lifted over a wall, is a different job for the driver.
What the yard looks at on return
Fuel level, tracks and rollers, the bucket teeth, hydraulic hoses and whether the machine came back with the day's mud still on it. Cleaning is chargeable at most branches. Federal rules require equipment to be inspected before use, so walking round it with the driver at delivery and photographing what you find protects both sides.

Yes, almost always. A week typically costs about three to four times the day rate rather than five, and a month is priced near three weeks. If the job is four days and might slip, the week is often the cheaper booking outright.
Do I need to call 811 before digging with a rented mini?
Yes. The utility locate is free, is required before mechanised digging in every state, and takes a couple of working days, so it is the first call rather than the last. The rental branch will not make it for you and takes no responsibility for what is under the ground.
What licence do I need to rent a mini excavator?
None to hire one. You need a driving licence for identification, a deposit or a card on file, and enough trailer capacity if you are collecting rather than taking delivery. Competence to run it safely is the employer's duty on a work site, not something the counter tests.
