The machine is the cheap part of the day
Hot mix is sold by the ton and arrives on a schedule you do not control, and it stops being workable as it cools. Around the paver you need a roller on hire too, a tack coat, shovels and rakes, and enough people to keep the hopper fed. Book the roller and the mix before you book the paver.
Some fleets rent it with an operator only

Can I lay my own driveway with a rented paver?
A small towable unit makes that possible, but the limit is the crew and the timing rather than the machine. You need the mix to arrive hot, a roller ready, and several people who know what a finished mat should look like. Many yards will rent the roller and the plate and steer a first timer toward a contractor for the screed.
Do I need to hire a roller as well?
Yes. A paver places and levels the mix; it does not compact it to density. A tandem vibratory roller or, on small work, a heavy plate follows the paver while the mat is still hot. Hire both for the same window and confirm they arrive on the same morning.
Is an operator included in the rate?
On walk behind and towable machines, usually not. On self propelled pavers it is common for the operator to be part of the deal, charged hourly on top of the machine, with a minimum number of hours. Ask before you plan the crew, because it changes who is doing what on the day.
