Size the bucket to the truck, not the pile
The neat number of passes to fill whatever you are loading is three to five. Fewer than three and you are spilling and stressing the machine; more than six and the truck waits. Work backwards from the body you are filling and the density of the material, and the right yardage falls out on its own.
Material density changes everything
A bucket rated in cubic yards assumes something loose and dry. Wet sand, soaked topsoil and crushed rock all weigh far more per yard, and a loader that heaps a light material will refuse to lift the same volume of wet aggregate. Tell the yard what you are moving and let them check it against the machine's rated operating load.
Compact loaders and where they stop
Under about 1 yard you are into compact wheel loaders and skid steers, which fit gateways and finished ground and cost far less to move between sites. They run out of reach when loading a high sided truck and out of breath in dense material, so a job that starts as a landscaping clean up can outgrow one by mid morning.
Tires, ground and what breaks
Tires are the loader's most expensive consumable and rock or scrap sites eat them, so contracts often carry a separate tire clause. Read it. On soft ground a wheeled machine also loses traction long before a tracked one does, which is the usual reason a hire runs longer than planned and costs more than the quote.

What is the difference between a front end loader and a wheel loader?
None worth arguing about. The trade uses both names for a rubber tired machine with a bucket on the front, though front end loader is also used loosely for the front bucket on a backhoe. When you call a yard, quote the bucket yardage or the operating weight and the ambiguity disappears.
Do I need a licence to run a rented loader?
No card is sold at the counter. Employers must train and authorise their own operators, and the yard's handover covers the specific machine's controls. A homeowner on private property should still read the operator manual in the cab before moving it.
Can a front end loader dig?
It can strip, scrape and push, but it is a loading machine rather than a digging one. Anything below grade, or anything with a vertical face, wants an excavator or a backhoe. Trying to dig a trench with a loader bucket usually ends with a much bigger hole than you wanted.
Is delivery included in the day rate?
Almost never. Transport is priced out and back and depends on the class of trailer the machine needs. On a compact loader that is a modest number; on a 5 yard machine it is a lowboy and a separate conversation.
