What the water is for decides the tank
Dust suppression and compaction moisture want volume and a pump, and are usually served by a poly tank with a trash pump or a water truck on call. Fire watch wants a tank with the right fittings for the hose the authority expects. Washdown wants pressure. Say the use when you call, not just the gallons.
Sizes and roughly what they cost
A 500 gallon skid tank is a light monthly hire. A 1,000 to 2,500 gallon poly tank is the common site size and rents by the month with delivery each way. Frac tanks of 18,000 to 21,000 gallons are a different product with their own transport and setup, priced by the month with a minimum period.
Siting comes before delivery
Level, compacted ground, clear of trenches and traffic, with room for the delivery truck and later for the water truck that fills it. A tank on soft fill settles unevenly and can split a fitting or roll. Once full it does not move, so a tank in the wrong place stays in the wrong place until the job drains it.
Drinking water is a separate rental
A construction water tank is not a potable vessel and should never be used for drinking, no matter how clean it looks. Potable hire is a different product: sanitised, certified for drinking water and delivered by a supplier who documents the cleaning. Order it as potable and keep the paperwork on site.

How do I fill a rented water tank?
Either from a metered hydrant with a permit and a backflow preventer, from a mains connection on site, or from a water truck that delivers and refills on a schedule. Ask the yard which of the three they arrange, because many rent the tank only and leave the water to you.

A static tank suits a fixed use like a wash station or a fill point. A towable water trailer suits moving the water to the work. A water truck with a spray bar suits dust control across a whole site and is hired by the day with a driver.
