Compaction machinery on a rental row falls into four families: vibrating plates, rammers, walk behind rollers and ride on drums, with trench rollers as a specialist fifth. Rates run from about $50 a day for a small plate to $450 for a ride on double drum. The one you can actually load, unload and steer for eight hours matters as much as the one the spec sheet prefers.
Asphalt and pavers want a different plate
A patch of hot mix or a run of block paving needs a plate with a rubber or polyurethane mat under it, otherwise the machine chips edges and marks the surface. Reversible plates with a water tank are the usual hire for asphalt, because dry steel picks material up. Ask for the mat as part of the booking; it is a separate item.
Weight is what turns a one person hire into two
A small plate is a pickup tailgate job for one person. A heavy reversible plate and a walk behind roller are not, and every year somebody hurts a back proving it. Ask the counter for the operating weight, then decide between ramps, a trailer with a winch, or paying for delivery to the working face.
The machine has to match the lift, not the area
Compaction is done in layers, and a machine that cannot reach the bottom of the layer just polishes the top. Thin lifts with a plate, thicker lifts with a rammer or a heavier drum. Where a spec or an inspector is involved, the layer depth is written down before the machine is hired, not after a test fails.
Noise and vibration are part of a long day
These machines run loud and shake hard, and a full shift behind one is a real exposure rather than a nuisance. Hearing protection is the obvious half; rotating operators and taking the water tank refills as breaks is the half people skip. OSHA publishes what employers owe on noise exposure and it applies on a hire just as it does on owned kit.
Questions people ask about compaction machinery
Plate or rammer for a trench backfill?
A rammer, almost always. Its narrow foot fits between the trench walls and its impact drives energy down through cohesive material rather than skimming it. A plate belongs on open granular ground where you want speed and a flat finish.
How long should I keep it on hire?
Longer than the compaction itself. Backfill goes in stages as pipe is bedded and inspections happen, and a machine returned on day one is a machine collected again on day three at another delivery charge. A week rate covers three to four days of hire in most books.
Is fuel included?
No. These come with a tank of petrol or diesel and go back the same way, or the yard refuels them and bills it at a rate above the pump. Take a can with you. The bigger ride on machines also carry water for the drums, which is on you to fill.
