The main filter is usually reusable and the pre filter or fleece bag is not, so a week of concrete cutting eats several. Yards bill the consumables used, and a machine handed back clogged can attract a cleaning charge. Buy bags with the hire, carry spares, and change them before suction falls rather than after.

Wet, dry, and the switch between them

Some units take slurry as well as dust and some do not. Wet cutting fills a tank quickly and the filter has to be swapped or protected first, which is a different setup on the same machine. Say which you are doing when you book, because running a dry filter into slurry destroys it and that is chargeable.

Is a HEPA vacuum the same as an air scrubber?

No. The vacuum captures dust at the tool before it reaches the room; a scrubber filters air already in the room. Dusty jobs often use both, and yards hire them on separate tickets with separate rates.

Do I need one for cutting concrete?

Cutting, grinding, drilling and chasing concrete all release respirable silica, and the standard's control table pairs most of those tools with either water or a dust extractor. Indoors the extractor is usually the practical choice, because water makes slurry you then have to remove.

Can I use it on lead paint or asbestos?

For lead dust a HEPA rated unit is the right machine and yards hire them for renovation work. Asbestos is regulated separately and is licensed work, so that question belongs with a trained contractor rather than a rental counter.
