The data sheet is part of what you hire
Every shield is rated for a depth and a soil condition by its maker, and the tabulated data is the document proving it. The excavation standard expects a protective system chosen from that data or designed by a registered engineer. If the yard cannot produce a sheet matching the serial number on the shield, ask for one that has it.
Stacking, and why two are not automatically deeper
Shields can sometimes be stacked to reach a deeper trench, but only in combinations the maker allows and with the proper stacking connectors. The rating falls as depth rises, and a stack changes how the whole assembly behaves under load. This is the part people improvise, and it is precisely the part the tabulated data exists to settle.

Is a trench shield the same as a trench box?
In everyday yard language, yes. Both name the two sided shield with spreaders lowered into an open cut. Sloping, benching and hydraulic shoring are the other ways to protect a trench, and none of them is interchangeable with a shield on every soil.
How deep before I need one?
The excavation standard puts protection on trenches five feet deep or more unless the cut is entirely in stable rock, and it lets a competent person require it shallower. Treat five feet as the point where the question stops being yours to weigh.
Can the excavator that dug the trench place it?
Usually, and that is the normal arrangement, provided the machine lifts the shield at its marked points and the operator can place it without swinging over anybody. Check the shield weight against the machine's chart at the radius you will actually be working.
