An engine hoist is one of the cheapest things on a rental counter and one of the easiest to get wrong. A folding two-ton shop crane typically rents for $40 to $70 a day, $120 to $200 a week, and the rated capacity on the sticker only applies with the boom fully retracted. Ask for a load leveller with the crane. It is the small threaded bar that lets you tilt the engine to clear the firewall, and pulling a unit without one turns into a fight with chains and blocks. Confirm the hoist folds for transport, because an assembled shop crane will not go in a hatchback, and check that the ram holds pressure before you drive away.
Floor conditions decide whether it works
Steel castors need flat, hard, clean ground. On gravel, grass or a cracked driveway the legs bind and the load swings, which is how these get tipped. A sloped garage floor is enough to start a loaded crane rolling on its own. If the only surface available is soft, plywood sheets under the leg path or a different lifting method is the honest answer.
Hoist, stand or lift table
The crane pulls the engine out. Once it is out, it is going somewhere: an engine stand rents for around $15 to $30 a day and is the safe place to leave a block for a fortnight. A hydraulic table lift is what you want under a transmission or subframe drop instead. Yards usually stock all three, and renting them together is cheaper than three separate trips.

Will a rented engine hoist fit in my car?
