Two different machines answer to the phrase
One is a purpose built towable backhoe, a seat and two levers on a trailer frame, digging around six to seven feet. The other is a conventional mini excavator sold with a matched trailer, which digs deeper and tracks properly on site. The first is a homeowner tool; the second is real plant that happens to travel behind a truck.
Check the hitch before you book anything
Loaded weight commonly lands between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds, which needs a rated receiver, the right ball size and often trailer brakes under state law. A half ton pickup usually manages a small towable; a crossover with a bolt on hitch does not. The yard will ask for your vehicle before it hands over the pin.
What it will and will not dig
Six or seven feet of depth covers a footing, a French drain, a stump or a service trench in workable ground. It will not reach a basement wall, and its slew and boom force are modest, so hardpan, roots and buried rubble slow it badly. If you hit those, the day you saved on haulage goes to the digging.

If you have no rated tow vehicle, no experience reversing a trailer, or a narrow site gate, the delivery line on a standard mini excavator is money well spent. Yard drivers unload on a slope daily. Do I need a special licence to tow one?
For most towable diggers a standard driver licence is enough, because loaded combination weights stay under the thresholds that trigger a commercial classification in most states. Brake and lighting rules still apply to the trailer, and those are checked at the roadside more often than the rest.
Can a towable excavator work on soft ground?
Some sit on wheels and outriggers rather than tracks, which means they push into wet lawn and lose stability on a side slope. On soft ground a tracked mini excavator spreads weight far better and leaves less to repair afterwards.
Is the trailer included in the rate?
On a purpose built towable the trailer is the machine, so yes. On a mini excavator hired with a trailer the trailer is usually its own line, along with a straps and chains check before you leave. Ask which arrangement you are being quoted.
