Rental staff price by class, not by nickname. Say mini excavator and you are quoted by operating weight in tons. Say backhoe and you get a tractor with a loader in front and a boom behind. Describing the hole, its depth, its width and what happens to the spoil gets you to the right machine faster than any name does.
Size by the gate first, the depth second
Access is the real constraint. A one ton machine passes a 36 inch gate, a 1.5 to 2 ton machine wants closer to 4 ft, and anything above 3 tons means a side gate or a fence panel out. Only then does dig depth matter: roughly 6 ft on the smallest units, 8 to 10 ft in the middle class.

Can I tow one myself?
A one to 1.5 ton mini excavator on a trailer is inside what many half ton pickups will pull, but the combined weight, the hitch rating and the trailer brakes all have to line up. Yards check this before releasing a machine, and most people find delivery cheaper than a weekend of worrying about it.
Do I need a licence to run one?
No state licence exists for hiring one and using it on your own property. On a jobsite the employer has to train and authorise whoever sits in it. The handover at the yard is a familiarisation on the controls, which is a demonstration rather than a qualification.
Digger or skid steer for a driveway?
If the work is mostly digging down, take the excavator. If it is mostly pushing, grading and carrying material about, a skid steer or a track loader does more in a day. Many jobs want both, and two machines for two days often beats one machine for four.
